A Gathering Space

Since 1885

The Lariat has been a fixture of downtown Buena Vista for generations and has a rich history that spans over a century. The brick building—206 E Main Street—in Buena Vista, CO, was constructed in 1885 and made with bricks manufactured south of town. The first business to occupy the building was J.P. Treloar Family Groceries and Meat Market. Since the 19th century, numerous establishments have filled the three sections of the building, including a soda fountain drugstore, confectionary, the first post office, a theater, almost a hardware store, various mercantile shops, a restaurant, and a bar. The name "The Lariat" has been used since the 1940s, although its origin remains a mystery.
